RCD trips in the meter box

The meter and protection box is usually installed at the property limit, on a pole or near the street. If the RCD trips, there may be leakage current to earth or an insulation fault.

Possible causes

  • moisture in an outdoor circuit or junction box;
  • cable insulation fault;
  • appliance leaking current to earth;
  • yard lighting, pump or gate circuit issue;
  • faulty or unsuitable RCD.

Safe checks

  • note when it trips: rain, pump start, large load;
  • turn off non-essential indoor circuits if safe;
  • do not open sealed metering equipment;
  • send photos of the meter box and indoor panel without removing live covers.

Safety

Do not work inside the meter box or sealed equipment. If there is burnt smell, sparks, smoke or damaged conductors, turn off consumers and request authorized service.
