Electrical problem

Socket gets hot

A warm or hot socket should not be ignored. It can indicate bad contact, high load or a loose connection in the box.

Possible causes

  • loose screws or contacts;
  • overloaded extension cord or adapter;
  • high-power appliance on unsuitable circuit;
  • old, burnt or oxidized socket;
  • damaged or undersized conductor.

Immediate steps

  • turn off the connected appliance;
  • do not use the socket until checked;
  • photograph the socket and plug;
  • if there is burnt smell or black marks, turn off the circuit.

When it is urgent

If the socket blackens, melts, smells burnt or sparks, stop using it and request electrical service.
